Corduroy by Don Freeman

When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room.

How these stories are connected: Corduroy is alone with the other toys in the department store. He longs for something more, though he's not even sure what it is he's missing. Lisa loves him from the moment she sees him, even though he has only one button on his overalls. Lydia's story echoes this sentiment; though she is successful and relatively wealthy, once she hears the story of Jesus she longs to follow. Baptism is God's way of bringing us all home and making us family.

Questions about Corduroy:

Why did Corduroy want to leave the department store?

What did he think he needed to do in order to leave?

     Why did Lisa want Corduroy?

Why didn’t she care that he didn’t have two buttons?

How did Corduroy know he was home?

Questions about the Bible story:

     What did Lydia sell?

Why did Lydia want to be baptized?

What did Lydia do after she was baptized?

How did she use her money? Why?

Questions about our lives:

Why should we share Jesus’ teachings with other people?

     How can we do that?

 Prayer

God, thank you for making us part of your family. Help us to welcome other people into your family, too. Amen.
