I made this fused glass plate with serving bread in mind. The plate uses the themes of fire and darkness from the Gospel of Matthew. In Matthew, darkness represents the pain of separation from God, and fire is the fire of the Holy Spirit that purifies and refines. Embers carry the fire into the darkness so that nowhere is truly dark. God's Spirit is everywhere. It is in the breaking of the bread that we recognize God's presence among us.
